The world’s first International Food Photography Day is taking place on Wednesday 14 November 2012. The organisers are encouraging everyone to celebrate the art of food photography “by taking a snap of their mid morning apple, a sandwich from their lunchbox, a takeaway curry or supper at a friend’s house…….wherever you are with food… take a picture and create your own food masterpiece”
“Pictures on phones or cameras, whatever comes to hand, make this a day to remember, for an art form that has been around, astonishingly, for more than 150 years, recording and celebrating all aspects of the earth’s bounty.”
The organisers don’t seem to say what we should be doing with the images we create on November 14th but as the whole thing is the idea of the organisers of Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year competition then I guess they want to encourage entries to that competition.
Held for the first time last year the competition is open to professionals and amateurs.
Anyone who registers for the competition on 14th November will be entered into a Prize Draw and there is a category for images taken on mobile phones.
Having said that, if you go to the competition website you will see a lot of very nice images across a number categories which include food in its natural setting and images that show the essence of a place. There are well established Travel Photographer of the Year and and Wildlife Photographer of the Year competitions, it will be interesting to see if a food photography competition can develop the same level of prestige and popularity.
